Course Objectives:

The Asbestos/Silica/Lead Awareness Training course is an introductory-level safety course intended to teach participants to recognize and avoid asbestos, silica, and lead hazards. Additionally, they will understand how to take appropriate measures to reduce their risk while working on construction sites. The goal of our Asbestos/Silica/Lead Awareness Training class is to teach participants the essentials and dangers of asbestos, silica, and lead exposure and how to stay safe on the job.

This class is approved for 3 credit hours of Continuing Education credits with Oregon Construction Contractor Board

Students who successfully complete Asbestos/Silica/Lead Awareness Training will learn how to recognize and avoid asbestos, silica, and lead hazards. Additionally, they will understand how to take appropriate measures to reduce their risk while working on construction sites.

Silica Awareness

The Respirable Crystalline Silica Awareness for Construction segment is an introductory-level safety course in which participants will learn the basics about silica and respirable crystalline silica dust that may be encountered on the construction sites. This segment is designed to identify the basic health hazards associated with potential exposure, some of the common construction tasks that might result in exposure to respirable crystalline, and typical control/management measures that employers might implement to protect works from potential exposure.

Additionally, course participants will learn the contents of the OAR 437-002-1053 regarding silica and respirable crystalline silica. The course will teach students to recognize who and what a competent person is and the basic requirements regarding respirable crystalline silica. Students who complete the course will gain a thorough and up-to-date understanding of the magnitude of silica in the construction environment, as well as the basic hazards, evaluations, and control techniques. Segment topics include the following: Introduction to silica and respirable crystalline silica, including background and definitions •

• Common construction activities that have the greatest potential for exposure
• Common hazards, evaluation, and control techniques of silica and respirable crystalline silica
• Importance of signage and labels, housekeeping, and a written exposure control plan
• Silica and respirable crystalline silica in construction summation

Lead Awareness

The Lead Hazards for Construction segment focuses on lead exposure in the construction industry and the serious harm it can do to one’s body. Throughout this training, participants will learn how to identify lead in the workplace, as well as which control methods should be used to avoid exposure and mitigate risk. This intermediate-level course follows OAR 437-003-0062 regulations regarding lead hazards for the prevention of harmful lead exposure.

The Lead Hazards for Construction segment is an intermediate-level training offering safety tips, as well as essential requirements regarding mitigating lead exposure risk within the construction industry.

Participants will learn the best work practices to avoid lead exposure, as well as necessary assessments, limits, action levels, and controls. Specific course topics include the following:

• Introduction to lead hazards in the workplace
• Lead hazards
• OAR standards regarding lead in the workplace
• Lead control methods
• Your right to know

Specific industry terms discussed throughout the course include the following:

• OAR standards
• Exposure assessment and limits
• Action level
• Permissible exposure limit (PEL)
• High efficiency particulate air (HEPA)

Asbestos Awareness

Although banned for new applications since 1989, asbestos was once a common component in many building materials, including insulation, roofing products, paints, and floor and ceiling tiles. Without proper safety measures, workers exposed to asbestos hazards may experience breathing difficulties, inflammatory conditions, mesothelioma, and other cancers.

This makes it essential for construction workers to know the dangers of asbestos exposure and how to stay safe on the job. The Asbestos Hazards for Construction course provides basic asbestos training in accordance with OAR 437-003-1101 standards for construction to keep workers safe and help stay compliant with all relevant State and Federal regulations.

Participants in the Asbestos Hazards for Construction course will learn about asbestos hazards in the construction industry, including:

• Essential facts about asbestos
• OAR regulations and classifications
• The designation and responsibilities of an asbestos Competent Person (CP)
• Testing and control
